Local students honored as presidential scholars

Three Seattle-area students were named 2008 Presidential Scholars Thursday, one of the nation's top honors for high school seniors.

There were 139 scholars announced Thursday. Of Washington's winners, two were from the Lakeside School in North Seattle. One Lakeside winner, Ari Livne of Mercer Island, was one of 20 students nationwide to be named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts.

The students will be honored in Washington D.C. this June after graduation.

Here's a little more about Washington's winners:

Anisha Gulabani: Anisha is a senior at Eastlake High School in Sammamish. She is a National Merit finalist, Gender Equity Club founder and president, and Children's Hospital's Guild treasurer. She works as an exhibit assistant at the Pacific Science Center, and attended the Stanford Debate Camp and the Bioquest Academy at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute. She plays the violin and piano and is a black-diamond skier, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Education.

Ari Livne: Ari earned the distinction of scholar in the arts. A student at the Lakeside, Ari travels from Seattle to New York on weekends to take piano lessons, according to a release. Despite his busy schedule, he has high grades and participates in Lakeside's chamber music ensemble, Knowledge Bowl and math team. He has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and is a leader in United Synagogue Youth. This fall, he will attend Yale.

Kelvin Bates: Kelvin is also a pianist -- but he plays in a rock band, too. He is a student at Lakeside, where he is involved in drama, debate, the math club, Science Olympiad, student government, tennis, swimming and the school literacy journal. He is a peer tutor and works with homeless outreach. And on top of that, Kelvin won a recent radio-station contest for songwriting, and published an essay in TIME Magazine.
