LEEP

A COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS
The Lakeside Educational Enrichment Program (LEEP) is designed to stimulate the intellectual curiosity of the participants, show them how enjoyable learning can be, help them understand they can achieve more than they ever thought possible. The program’s aim is to boost students to higher achievement during the summer and later in their school life. The goal is to have them bond together as a community of learners who share some common values.

The program runs for six weeks every summer. LEEP is funded through private and corporate donations, thus there is no cost to participants, other than purchasing lunches if desired.

The LEEP program has five components:
1) Academics (math, English, and geography)
2) Athletics (basketball, softball, soccer, and rowing)
3) Stand and Deliver (a three-to-five minute presentation before the entire LEEP assemblage)
4) Camping trip (a 3-4 day trip in the Washington State wilderness)
5) Graduation (an official and heartwarming graduation ceremony attended by families)

For more information, see "What is LEEP".

PROGRAM VALUES AND EXPECTATIONS
  • Respect yourself and others
  • Actively participate
  • Take risks (obviously reasonable ones)
INSTILLING VALUES
These values evolved out of our work and help bond us all to each other. At LEEP, we talk about these values constantly. They are on the walls of the instructional facility and we instill these values in students in every program activity, as they represent the expressions of our mutual community. While all of the teachers enforce our rules, the LEEP values are the basis upon which disagreements or conflicts are resolved. Discipline has always been a part of LEEP and we let the students know possible consequences if they act in a disrespectful fashion or transgress the community standards that are in place. We also believe in publicly praising and rewarding students for positive behavior and personal growth. Each day we give a “Snickers” award to the LEEPer who best exemplified the program values the previous day. LEEP is built around mutual respect and honesty rather than command and rank and we want LEEP students to clearly understand and believe that we want them to learn and succeed. Our other rules are rather simple: stay on campus, no more than three absences, respect the facilities, no skateboards, and no electronic devices (unless authorized by a teacher).
