Following in the footsteps of three older siblings, Marcy Brown Summers ’81 attended Lakeside from 8th grade through her senior year. After graduating, she earned her BA in comparative religion and fine arts at Harvard, followed by her masters in wildlife ecology from the University of Maine. While living in Maine, she was elected mayor of Hampden where she successfully negotiated a resolution to a long-term problem with toxic pollution from a large commercial landfill. From Maine, she moved to the Washington, D.C. area where she began working for The Nature Conservancy (TNC). In 1999, her work with TNC brought her back to Seattle, and then sent her halfway across the world to Indonesia. Her work there inspired her to create an independent nonprofit organization, the Alliance for Tompotika Conservation. Marcy currently lives on Vashon Island with her daughter Clara, a freshman at Lakeside; her son, Jack, who is attending middle school; four cats; a flock of chickens; and, Diah, their dog, rescued from the streets of Jakarta.
