With a showdown at the Bellevue Invitational coming up this Saturday, the Lakeside cross-country team took Wednesday's race as an opportunity to practice pacing and finishing strong. Any runners racing on Saturday spent the first two miles of the Lincoln Park race at "tempo" pace before finishing the last mile at race pace.

Many of the other Metro league teams deployed similar strategies, and, as a result, Lakeside finished in 2nd place out of 6 teams in both the boys and girls races. Ballard won both races.

vs.
Nathan Hale High School, Rainier Beach High School

Although only three teams--Lakeside, Nathan Hale, and Rainier Beach--toed the starting line on Friday afternoon at Lower Woodland Park, the competition was fierce. Still, Declan O and Claudia H both notched their second consecutive victories at Lower Woodland this season.

The Lakeside boys put three runners--Declan O, Sanjay R, and Sebastian A--in the top five, but were unable to come away with the team victory after a string of Nathan Hale runners flowed into the finish chute after Sebastian. When the final scores were tallied, Nathan Hale eked out a 27-31 victory over the Lions.

On the girls side, Claudia H, Emily C, and Esther R led the Lions to a convincing win over Hale 23-36. Helen D recorded her fastest time of the season and rounded out the Lions' top 5 with an 8th place finish.

The Lions will be busy next week with a Metro League meet Wednesday at Magnuson Park and a highly competitive invitational on Saturday up north at the Hole in the Wall Invitational.

vs.
Cleveland High School, Franklin High School, Nathan Hale High School

On a picture-perfect day for cross-country running at Magnuson Park, a number of Lakeside runners put in season-best performances on a fast course. AbdurRahman B and Helen D clocked season-best times over the 5k distance and finished in 8th (17:13) and 4th (22:19), respectively. With the highly competitive Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational looming on the horizon, several of Lakeside's top runners ran a tune-up workout for this Saturday's invitational. The Lions only have two more meets before the Metro Championships and that competition is shaping up to be a battle between a host of talented teams on both the boys and girls sides.

Hole in the Wall Invitationals

On a day filled with fierce competition and fast times, the Lakeside boys and girls cross-country teams notched 15th and 27th place finishes in the top varsity races at the Hole in the Wall Invite, respectively. Sanjay R and Claudia H led their teams with 27th and 41st place individual finishes, respectively.

In the day's other races, Grace H, Mila B, Charlie H, and Joe M recorded big personal records. With cool temperatures, sporadic rain, and flat terrain, The Hole in the Wall Invite provided an ideal opportunity to record a fast time. Only one meet remains for the Lions before the Metro League Championships at Woodland Park on October 19th.

Metro Championships

It took a monumental effort on a wet and rainy afternoon, but, for the first time since the Metro League expanded to 16 schools, both Lakeside boys and girls cross-country teams will be moving on to the district meet. Declan O and Claudia H both recorded 4th place finishes at the Metro League Championships at Woodland Park to lead the boys and girls teams, respectively.

The boys were easily the most improved team in the Metro League, catapulting seven places to finish in 3rd place as a team, just one year after missing the district meet with a 10th place Metro meet finish. Nipping at Declan O's heels, Sanjay R made it two Lions in the top 10 this year by finishing in 7th with a course PR of 16:25. Sebastian A was the next Lakeside runner across the line, coming in 18th in a course PR of 16:48.

AbdurRahman B, the next Lion across the line, delivered one of the most inspired races of the day. He shaved 37 seconds off his all-time PR and broke the 17 minute barrier for the first time, all on the way to a top 20 finish. Elian J rounded out the scoring for the Lions with a 56th place finish and secured for the team a trip to Lake Sammamish State Park next weekend for the district meet. Fred L and Xander U will also be toeing the line for the Lions next weekend.

The girls also improved on their finish from last season, jumping from 9th to 7th place as a team. Esther R was the second Lion across the line, stopping the clock at 21:12 in 48th place. Emily C followed close behind in 50th place and Caitlin C made her last Metro League race one to remember with a lifetime PR of 21:16. Caitlin C will be making her 4th district meet appearance next Saturday. Chloe V rounded out the Lions' top 5 with a 63rd place finish. Tea F and Helen D recorded strong finishes as the Lions' 6th and 7th runners, respectively.

Sea-King District 2 Championships @ Lake Sammamish State Park

On a picturesque fall day at Lake Sammamish State Park, the Lakeside Boys XC team secured a spot to the State meet for the first time since 2011. The Lions finished in 5th place with a team score of 129 to edge out Franklin (145) and Seattle Prep (148) for the final spot to State.

Sanjay R, Sebastian A, and Declan O all finished within ten seconds of each other and inside the top 20 overall to lead the Lions. AbdurRahman B continued his hot streak with a personal best time of 16:40 to place 33rd and Fred L closed the door on the competition with a 63rd place finish to round out the Lions top five. Xander U (86th) and Elian J (95th) will also be toeing the line at the State Championships next Saturday for the Lions.

On the Girls side, Claudia H delivered her strongest race of the year yet and was the first freshman across the line in 5th place. Claudia's finish punches her ticket to the State meet next weekend. Esther R was the second Lion across the line and finished in a season best 20:43. The Girls team finished in 11th place with a team score of 247.

WIAA 3A Girls State Cross Country Meet
WIAA 3A Boys Varsity Cross Country Meet

One season after finishing 10th place at the Metro League championships, the Lakeside Boys Cross-Country team again recorded a 10th place finish, only this time it was at the WIAA State Championship meet. The 10th place finish was the Lakeside boys' highest finish at the meet since 2005, when the Lions took 6th place as a team.

Every Lakeside runner finished in a personal best time on a cold day at Pasco's Sun Willows golf course. Sanjay R led the Lions with a time of 16:09 and 32nd place finish. Declan O crossed the line in 45th place with a time of 16:18 and Sebastian A followed close behind with a time of 16:25. AbdurRahman B and Fred L rounded out the scoring for the Lions with 68th and 111th place finishes, respectively. The future is bright for Lions XC, who return their top 18 runners from this season.

On the girls side, Claudia H wrapped up a tremendous freshman year campaign with a 20th place individual finish at the State meet. Her time of 18:40 was an 11 second PR from a week earlier.
