Fulbright Memorial Fund (FMF) Teacher Program This competitive program provides a unique opportunity for United States primary and secondary school teachers and administrators to participate in a fully funded three-week study visit to Japan, where they will study the Japanese culture and education system. The program is sponsored by the government of Japan
Fulbright Teacher & Administrator Exchange Program One year exchange program for teachers who have 3 years teaching experience and are U.S. citizens.

National Endowment for the Humanities

Summer Institutes.

Purpose: the NEH supports teachers who wish to strengthen and expand their understanding of history, literature, foreign languages and cultures, and other areas of humanities.  With NEH support, teachers may join a Summer Institute and spend from 3-6 weeks in formal study on a humanities topic and its applications to the classroom.  Participants receive a stipend plus books, lodging and other expenses.  Info: 202-606-8282

Summer Seminars for School Teachers.

Purpose: Participants’ Grants provide support for full-time schoolteachers to participate in summer seminars directed by accomplished teachers and active scholars, focusing on significant texts in the humanities.  A list of seminar offerings may be obtained from the program.  Directors’ Grants provide support for accomplished teachers and scholars to direct summer seminars at colleges, universities, museums, libraries, and similar institutions.  Teachers selected to participate in the program and direct the seminars will receive a stipend of $2,450, $2,825 or $3,200 depending upon the length of the seminar.  The stipend is intended to cover travel costs to and from the seminar location, books, and other research expenses as well as living expenses for the tenure of the seminar.  Info: 202-786-0463.

Summer Stipends.

Purpose: Grants provide support for college and university teachers; individuals employed by schools, museums, libraries, etc. to undertake full-time independent study and research in the humanities for two consecutive summer months.  Info: 202-786-0466.

Council for Basic Education National Fellowships for Independent Study in the Humanities.

Purpose: The Endowment has awarded a grant to the Council for Basic Education to support a program of summer fellowships for elementary and secondary schoolteachers with at least five years of teaching experience.  School principals and librarians may also be eligible to apply.  Fellowships of up to $3,200, including a stipend for a mentor and a book allowance support six weeks of independent study in one of the disciplines of the humanities.  Info: 202-347-417

Elementary and Secondary Schools Humanities Focus Grants.

Purpose: These grants enable small groups of teachers, faculty members, and other educators who work together to develop their understanding of important topics in the humanities and, if they choose, to translate that understanding into plans of action for their institutions.  Participants of these grants engage with scholars in joint study and organize workshops on intellectual issues and related curricular questions. 

National Employment Minority Network Recruiting Teachers of Color

Established in 1994, Nemnet is a national resource organization committed to assisting schools and organizations in the identification and recruitment of minority students and professionals.

Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory
