5th grade in full swing

We hope everyone is staying well and healthy as we get deeper into the fall season. If anyone is counting, our 5th graders are wrapping up the eighth week of their first year at Lakeside! Please see below for what is in store for our grade in the next couple of weeks. And just a friendly reminder, there is no school on Monday, Oct. 24. We are happy to be on this journey together with you and hope you will always feel free to reach out to us with any questions and suggestions.

Warmly,

Your 5th-grade class reps

Brooke, Michele, Rebecca, and Sun

5th-grade news

Seeking hosts for 5th-grade potlucks

Many thanks to the families who volunteered to open their homes for the upcoming 5th-grade potlucks. We would love to have two more families who can host these informal dinners or brunches in families' homes over the weekends of Dec. 2-4, Dec. 9-11, or Jan. 6-8. This will ensure all who want to attend have an event available. These are adults-only events and the hosts would accommodate 4-6 couples in their homes. Please contact our potluck coordinators Sheila Talwar and Alice Streidl if you are willing to host one of these fun gatherings or would like to find out more details.

5th-grade peer group meeting

Tuesday, Oct. 25, 7-8:30 p.m., MS Dining Room

The 5th-grade parent and guardian peer group gathers twice during the school year (in the fall and in the spring) and serves as a casual forum to help build community, share parenting questions and strategies, and learn from each other's perspectives and wisdom. In the past, the 5th-grade peer group has shared common insight on a wide range of topics such as transitioning to Lakeside and managing experiences with technology or social media. All discussion topics generated by parents and guardians remain confidential, and no administrators attend the meetings. No need to RSVP, but if you have any questions, please contact our peer group facilitators Darbie Kirk, Fauzia Aslam, or Gina Kwan.

5th-grade Halloween party

Friday, Oct. 28, 2:20-3:05 p.m.

Exciting things are in the works for the 5th-grade Halloween party to be held on Oct. 28. Please be sure to ask your 5th grader about the fun activities! For any questions on this event, please contact our events rep Brooke Pigott.

Register for the ROAR auction!

Saturday, Nov. 19, 5:30 p.m., Fremont Studios

When you register for the Lakeside Hoedown, you may request to be seated at a 5th-grade table, list friends that you would like to sit with, or build a full table of ten. Also when you register, please consider underwriting a teacher to attend ROAR free of charge, by selecting "sponsor a staff" from the ticket options. Please register early, as traditionally ROAR tickets sell out quickly. ROAR registration is open until Monday, Nov. 7.

Join in the Rummage work parties

Tuesday, Nov. 1 and Nov. 8, 8 a.m.-12 p.m., Rummage Depot

Join us for our next sorting parties at the Rummage Depot (lower level of the PGA office, 14201 4th Ave. NE, at the NE corner of the Upper School). We will sort, price, and box donated sporting goods for the spring Lakeside Rummage sale. There's no need to RSVP, but feel free to let our rummage reps Michele Osborne or Rebecca Panos know you are interested. Hope to see you at the Rummage Depot!

Be part of the Lakeside Rummage tradition

The Lakeside School Rummage Sale, now in its 68th year, has become legendary in Seattle for its enormous size and treasures. Just think, when Lakeside Rummage started in 1948, Harry Truman was re-elected in an upset over Thomas Dewey, the first jet flew across the Atlantic, and experimental TV broadcasting was just starting. The Cleveland Indians have not won a World Series since then, but there's hope for this year! Please join in the long-time tradition to support our school - donate and lend your hand. Bring your donations to the Rummage Depot located on the lower level of the PGA office (14201 4th Ave. NE, at the NE corner of the Upper School). Please try to schedule your donation drop-offs when the Rummage Depot is open (Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m.-12 p.m.).  However, if the Depot is not open, please just leave your donations by the door. To discourage theft, please do not leave donations after 12 p.m. on Fridays. Here is what we need. If you have questions, please contact Michele Osborne or Rebecca Panos

News from the T.J. Vassar diversity and community committee
Monday, Nov. 21, 7 p.m., PGA office
Come learn about the work of the DCC and give input on future diversity-related speakers. Our first meeting will be on Monday, Nov. 21. Also, save the date on Monday, Dec. 5 for our first DCC speaker, Washington Supreme Court justice, Mary Yu. Justice Yu will share her journey from inner-city Chicago to becoming the first Latina, first Asian, and first openly gay justice to serve on our state's highest court. Refreshments will be served from 6:30 p.m. with the talk beginning at 7 p.m. in Kent Evans Auditorium at the Upper School. Questions? Please contact Katja Shaye or Susan Takemoto.

Parent and guardian affinity groups kick-off, a smashing success
Parents and guardians deeply appreciated having an opportunity to connect with other families and talk about their students' experiences including how to best support them in their identity. One of the highlights of the evening included learning what students have been discussing in their affinity and alliance groups and understanding what's on their minds. Missed the kick-off event on Oct. 10? It is not too late to participate. Complete this questionnaire to join a mailing list, and you will be notified about your group's next meeting. Most meetings will be potlucks and take place off campus. Should you have any questions, please refer to these Frequently Asked Questions. You may also contact Bridgette Taylor, PGA's vice president for equity and inclusion, or Christel McGuigan, director of equity and instruction.
