Winter tailgate tonight!
Friday, Jan. 27, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Paul G. Allen Athletics Center
Celebrate lion pride with a winter tailgate party featuring free pizza and snacks, halftime entertainment, a free giveaway for the first 200 fans, and fun for all ages! All Lakeside Upper and Middle School students, parents, guardians, faculty, and staff are welcome and encouraged to participate. Come cheer on the Lakeside varsity girls and boys basketball teams as they battle the Eastside Catholic Crusaders. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. for the girls game and 8:30 p.m. for the boys game. The tailgate party will start at 6:30 p.m. and end when the pizza runs out. In addition to free pizza and snacks, food will be available for purchase from concession stands and two food trucks located in the parking lot. Remember to wear your lion pride t-shirt or other maroon and gold; if you need to purchase Lakeside spirit-wear, the logowear team will be on hand with the latest Lakeside swag. Lakeside logowear sale tonight

Show your school spirit! Logowear favorites, sweatshirts, t-shirts, scarves, caps, blankets, and tumblers, can be purchased at the winter tailgate. Students may charge logowear to their student account. Cash and checks are also accepted. PGA affinity groups schedule next meetings

The potluck meeting will be held at a private residence on Mercer Island. The theme will be "stages of coming out." PGA general membership meeting
Tuesday, Jan. 31, 8:15-10:30 a.m., US Kent Evans auditorium
All parents and guardians are invited to attend the PGA general membership meeting. Refreshments will be available starting at 8:00 a.m. The meeting will begin at 8:15 a.m. Speakers from the school will include Bernie Noe, Alixe Callen, Elaine Christensen, and Jamie Asaka. We will have an update on ROAR fundraising results and hear about plans for the spring Rummage Sale. Members of the nominations committee will be on hand to talk about volunteer opportunities for next year. Suicide prevention presentation
Thursday, Feb. 2, 7-9:00 p.m., MS Evans Theater
Lakeside is participating in a suicide prevention program called "Forefront in Schools." The Forefront program includes training for educators, parents, guardians, and students aimed at reducing suicides, especially teen suicides, in Washington state. One of our Lakeside parents, Anne Marie Krivens, has been working with a committee of Lakeside counselors and faculty to implement the Forefront program at Lakeside. This adults-only presentation will provide parents and guardians with practical tips on how to talk about suicide with teens, how to identify warning signs, and what to do if you are concerned that someone you know may be suicidal.

PGA budget process
Each spring, the PGA allocations committee begins the process of budgeting funds raised by the PGA towards expenditures for the following school year. The committee, headed by the PGA President and Treasurer, meets to formulate a budget, starting in February, and presents the budget for the upcoming school year to the PGA membership at the general membership meeting in May. PGA expenditures fall into two major categories: contributions to Lakeside, and PGA operations (expenses associated with two major fundraisers, ROAR and Rummage, and expenses related to operating other PGA programs and events).

Summary of PGA Budget 2016-2017:
PGA contributions to Lakeside $475,250 (64%)
PGA programs and operations $105,600 (14%)
ROAR event expense budget $137,200 (19%)
Rummage sale expense budget $ 20,400 (3%)
Total PGA expense budget $738,450

The summary above shows that the majority of the PGA's fundraising revenue is directed back to the school to support Lakeside's funding priorities. For 2016-17, Lakeside used our contribution to support its operating costs, as seed money for the arts renovation initiative, as "tools for the job" that teachers use to improve student learning, to fund Lakeside endowments, and for faculty educational enrichment. The balance of our revenues provided for PGA-sponsored programs and events this year (tailgates, lectures, grade-level picnics and coffees, Back-to-School Picnic, prom, arts receptions), and to offset ROAR and Rummage expenses. In the last couple of years, PGA fundraisers (ROAR, Rummage and logowear) have netted approximately $660,000 annually. Each year, the PGA also holds a reserve balance invested with Lakeside's investment funds. For a more detailed breakdown of the PGA budget for the 2016-17 school year, click here. Building next year's PGA team
The PGA nominations committee identifies and recruits volunteers to make up next year's PGA board. Please help this process by filling out a short survey here. Don't worry; this survey does not commit you to anything. It helps the committee identify your areas of interest, and it also allows you to recommend others for certain positions. Given the variety of PGA positions, there is literally something for every talent, style, and time commitment. Please contact nominations chair, Mike Cero, if you have questions. Music in the City was a hit
Our second annual Music in the City concert at Benaroya was a huge success, thanks to our talented students and amazing teachers. Also, many thanks to the parents, guardians, faculty, staff, and students who attended the performance. A special thanks to Allison Conkin, Lakeside special events coordinator, and to all the volunteers who helped make the night run smoothly.
