Endowment Campaign Goal: $8,000,000
To nurture the ethos of global citizenship in our students, we have established the Global Service Learning program. Starting in 2005, we sent students on month- to six-weeks-long trips to developing nations around the world to learn about the host country’s cultures, traditions, and languages, and to explore the issues facing each country.
Our plan is that students spend 70 percent of their time abroad engaged in service learning as part of each trip. These trips will be tied to local service-learning initiatives, in most cases we work with U.S. organizations (such as Pacific Village Institute and Crooked Trails) that operate within the host countries.
In the summer of 2005 Global Service Learning projects traveled to China, Peru, and India. By the summer of 2006, we added programs in the Dominican Republic and Morocco. In 2007 we added Costa Rica for the Middle School students.
We seek to make this experience available so that any student, regardless of his or her family’s financial status, will be able to participate.
