Summer Activities

The Lakeside Educational Enrichment Program (LEEP) is designed to stimulate the intellectual curiosity of the participants, to show students how enjoyable learning can be and that they can achieve more than they thought they could. The program’s aim is to boost students to higher achievement during the summer and later in their school life. The goal is to have them bond together as a community of learners who share some common values.

The program was established in 1965 and is aimed primarily at Seattle public school students about to enter ninth grade. Students apply to enter the program, and are often recommended by their middle school counselors. This six week program takes place over the summer on the Lakeside School campus, and is funded entirely by donations from private donors.

In the summer before they start high school, LEEPers participate daily in academics (math, English and geography) and athletics. They learn to row in teams. Every participant gives a short "stand and deliver" speech to the entire assembly. In the middle of the summer, everyone goes on a camping trip, hiking in the Washington state wilderness. A high point is the graduation ceremony at the end of the summer. LEEP graduates then meet periodically during the school year to discuss some of the summer events, talk about their current schooling, get college counseling assistance or participate in some type of enrichment activity.

LEEP is a program of Lakeside School. Lakeside School is an independent school with two campuses, the Middle School (5 - 8 grades) and the Upper School (9 -12 grades).
