Each teacher, counselor and student must Stand & Deliver, that is, each person must make a three- to five-minute presentation before the entire LEEP assemblage. This is an extremely difficult endeavor for a thirteen- or fourteen-year-old, especially since most have only met each other during the six week summer session. This, however, may be the seminal LEEP hurdle and is clearly a primary bonding activity for the summer. All students must Stand & Deliver before they can successfully graduate and earn high school credit. Students sing, read poetry and stories, give speeches, play musical instruments as well as other creative presentations. They are all rated on how well they do. Everything that happens in LEEP is looked upon as a learning activity and is therefore assessed. Some students elect to make very personal statements to their peers. In fact, the Stand & Deliver provides some students with the vehicle to speak seriously about sex, drugs, family life, and how it feels to be a teen. These presentations are a hallmark of the program.
