LEEP Values and Expectations

•Respect yourself and others

•Actively participate

•Take risks (obviously reasonable ones)

These are the LEEP values. We talk about them all of the time. They are on the walls of the instructional facility. We inculcate these values in students in every program activity. These are the expressions of our mutual community. While all of the teachers enforce our rules, the LEEP values are the basis upon which disagreements or conflicts are resolved. These values simply evolved out of our work and help bond us all to each other.

Our other rules are rather simple:

No electronic devices (e.g., game boys, cell phones, or boom boxes are prohibited except when authorized by a teacher)
Stay on campus
No absences beyond three days
Respect the facilities
No skateboards

Discipline has always been a part of instruction. LEEP teachers may use whatever discipline works for them. Suspensions from the program require the director’s concurrence. Discipline at LEEP has not been much of a problem because we inform students of our expectations of them up front. We emphasize the LEEP values in every facet of the program. We also let the students know possible consequences if they act in a disrespectful fashion or transgress the community standards that we have in place. One of the most important reasons for having one teacher teach a variety of subjects is so that the teacher and the student can build a healthy relationship with each other quickly within the confines of our six-week summer program. When a relationship exists between teacher and student, discipline becomes much easier. LEEP discipline is built around mutual respect and honesty rather than command and rank. We want LEEP students to clearly understand and believe that we want them to learn and succeed.
