FAQ’s

Q: At what grade do students learn to play an instrument?

A: 5th and 6th grade. All incoming 5th graders, and some 6th grade students learn to play violin, viola, cello, or possibly the bass in Introduction to String Orchestra course;

Q: I’m not sure I like my current instrument, can I switch to a different one?

A: Yes.. Please have your student see me for an individual lesson and we can discuss the possibilities.

Q: I'm an incoming fifth grader, what instruments can I play for my first year at Lakeside?

A: You can learn the violin, viola, cello, or possibly the bass. The 5th grade Intro to String Orchestra course fulfills the music requirement and places a strong emphasis on music literacy. The string instrument is a vehicle for attaining this literacy, and provides students the background necessary for continuing their involvement in instrumental music throughout their experience at Lakeside. If you have several years of previouse experience on a wind instrument, piano, drums, etc., you can join one of the other ensembles starting in the 6th grade.

Q: Are private lessons required?

A: No. We are one of the only schools in the country to offer access to conservatory level private instruction in the first years study. We will help you find an experienced teacher. Every effort has been made to guarantee that your student will have access to lessons at a convenient location and time. Lessons can be arranged off campus in your teachers private studio, or at Lakeside between 3:30 and 6pm; however, on-campus lessons are available on a first come-first-serve basis and are dependent on the teachers schedules and room availability.

Q: What do I need to have with me everyday? Why?

A: Instrument, text book(s), music folder, positive approach!

Q: What is my homework, what should I be practicing?

A: You should practice your instrumentas often as possible. The advanced ensembles will also have a daily assignment from the conductor.

Q: When will I get my music?

A: Your personal copies of the music will be handed out when you have acquired the three ring binder, and you have demonstrated your mastery of the classroom rules and procedures. This typically occurs by the second week of class and as needed throughout the year.
