It keeps you credible by proving that the information you present is from a reliable source.

Here's a basic format to follow: 

Electronic Sources

Online Encyclopedias

"Name of article."  Name of encyclopedia.  URL, access date.
ex. "Wombats."  Encyclopedia Americana.  http://www.americana.com (August 20, 2001).

Online Magazine & Newspaper Articles (with author)

Author. "Name of article."  Name of article's original source, Publication date. [Online]  Name of database or URL, access date.
Bechtel, Mark.  "Are the Mariners the Best Team Ever?" Sports Illustrated, August 20, 2001. [Online] Ebsco Host, accessed August 20, 2001.

 

Online Newspaper (anonymous)

"Title of article."  Title of newspaper Date of publication.  Date of access <URL>.

How to cite a survey (essentially an interview, so cite in a similar manner)

Last name, First name. "Name of survey." Survey. DD Month YYYY.

Smith, Jane. "Favorite PE Activities." Survey. 17 April 2008.
