Subject Guides

You've heard of Yahoo? It's a subject guide, which means the links are organized by subject and chosen by real people instead of a computer.  The subject guides listed below are terrific resources for students.

answers.com
Clear, reliable information drawn from reputable books and web sites. Winner of the 2006 CODIE Award for Best Educational Search Service.

Librarians' Index to the Internet

Organized by subject, with hundreds of recommended links.

KCLS Homework Help

Organized by subject, a listing of sites selected by librarians from King County Library System.
kidsclick! Organized by librarians.  Includes over 5,000 sites. Indicates reading level of each site.  Offers image searches.

Search Engines

Search engines use the keywords you provide to search among thousands of sites.  A program called a spider (or crawler or robot) crawls the web to deliver a list of links for you to evaluate.  Search engines are especially useful when you are looking for very specific information.  Just remember that ANYONE can put ANYTHING on a web page - be sure to evaluate web sites carefully.

Google

Uses "weighted link popularity" to rate the returns.  If many other web sites link to a source, that source will appear at the top of the "hits" page.

HotBot

Does both simple and advanced searches, with check-lists and pull-down menus to help you refine a search. "Pages Must Include" feature allows a search for files such as images or audio.

www.askforkids.com

The next generation of the popular Ask Jeeves website.

Online Databases

Search engines don't search databases, but you can!  Lakeside subscribes to several databases, which Lakeside students can use either at school or at home.  These databases do not carry advertising, and can be counted on for reliable, accurate information.

Proquest

Provides access to hundreds of magazines and The Seattle Times and New York Times.
Britannica Online Several versions of the encyclopedia for different reading levels. Also provides an Internet Guide and Video and Media section.
