Both Sales to Stay on Campus
The Parents Association and school administration have agreed to hold both the Fall and the Spring Rummage Sales on the school campus next year. The sales will be about equal in size and will utilize the same spaces used at this year’s Spring Sale. Dates for next year’s sales have not been set.

Spring Sale Succeeds Despite Unseasonable Weather
Neither rain nor snow nor hail nor sleet could stop the army of Lakeside students, parents, guardians, faculty and staff from setting up the Spring Rummage Sale in record time. There were huge lines of customers eagerly waiting for the doors to open on Saturday morning. Once the sale opened, the merchandise flew out the doors. Volunteers and customers alike seemed happy to be on campus.

A huge thank you to everyone—students, parents, guardians, faculty, staff, alumni, alumni parents—who volunteered their time and energy to make the Spring Rummage Sale a huge success.

Depot News
The class reps, alumni, loaders and other volunteers have done a phenomenal job managing the steady stream of donations. The Depot looks great!

The Rummage PALS (Partners Active in Lakeside Service) program was initiated to identify and work with a broader variety of local charities to recycle donations and reduce the amount of merchandise we take to the sales.  Northwest Center, First Place School, Treehouse and St. Francis House homeless shelter are current beneficiaries.  Rummage plans to work with Lakeside Service Learning to expand this list.

The Depot is open Monday-Thursday 9 am- 3 pm and every other Friday. If you can’t volunteer on your regular class days, drop in any time the Depot is open.

Starting this fall the Rummage Depot will only accept donations Monday-Thursday 9 am to 3 pm.  Theft of donations left when the depot is closed has been increasing.  We want to get the benefit of all you donate to us.  We appreciate your help in dropping donations off during depot hours.

A Seattle Institution – The Tradition and History of Rummage
The tradition of Lakeside Rummage dates back to 1950 when the first small rummage sale raised $2000. Over the past 50 plus years it has grown and changed many times.

In the early years of Rummage, sales were held in various rent-free venues made available to the school. By 1977, however, Rummage had become so large that space for the Spring Sale had to be rented. Many shoppers remember the days when the sale was held at Seattle Center. From 2003 to 2007 the Spring Rummage Sale moved to the 89,000 sf Hangar 27 at Sandpoint Magnuson Park. The convenient parking and bus service as well as the huge space, allowed the Parents Association to expand the sale. Hangar 27 is no longer available. For the first time during the 2007-08 school year, both Fall and Spring Sales (of almost equal size) were held on the Lakeside School campus.

Rummage is a year-round volunteer effort of the Lakeside Parents Association and has been a vital tradition at Lakeside for over half a century. Ongoing Rummage operations are housed in the Rummage Depot located on the northeast corner of the Upper School Campus (14201 4th Avenue NE). Lakeside volunteers receive and sort incoming donations at the Depot throughout the year. New and lightly-used household items in good, working condition are packed and put into storage to be sold at annual sale(s) to raise money for the school. Other goods and specialty items are passed onto to local charities for reuse or recycling. Organizations benefiting from Lakeside Rummage operations include Northwest Center, Multiple Sclerosis Helping Hands, area shelters, PAWS Wildlife Rescue, ReStore, and other non-profits. [See Making Donations link above for hours of operation and additional information on how to make donations.]

As with any event that has been put on faithfully year in and year out for over half a century, Lakeside Rummage is steeped in tradition and lore. Whether it’s the story of the amazing donation of a document signed by Abraham Lincoln or the amusing account of volunteers scrambling to find a donated boot when family jewels had been left in the toe, stories have been passed down through the years creating a special, oral history of a time honored tradition. At its heart, Rummage is a tradition of change, of volunteer commitment, and of the ongoing effort of the Parents Association to support the school. The legacy of this tradition is an undoubtedly unique and impressive volunteer venture that strives to provide a rewarding and fun volunteer experience for Lakeside’s parent and alumni populations that not only strengthens the Lakeside community, but also provides a valuable service to the greater Seattle community through recycling and selling donated items.

Volunteer opportunities for on-going operations as well as for Rummage Sale abound. Further information is provided on the link Volunteering in the Depot or you can simply stop by or call the Rummage Depot. The Rummage Chairs will be happy to help you find a job that fits your interests and availability.
