Galapagos Adventure!

Lakeside’s Ecuador LIP Trip – June, 2005

On June 16, 2005, twelve Lakeside students and two teachers boarded a flight for Quito.  What awaited them was 14 days of adventure, including:

·        A daredevil mountain bike descent through the Andes

·        Swimming with reef sharks and penguins

·        A trek through the cloud forest to a spectacular waterfall

·        Close personal encounters with giant tortoises and sea lions

·        Lots and lots of boobies (and a few albatrosses)

Here’s a map of the Galapagos.  We flew into the small airport on the island of San Cristobal.  From there we traveled to Espanola (Hood), Santa Cruz, Santa Maria (Floreanna), Isabella, Fernandina, Santiago (James), Bartolome, Santa Cruz again, Baltra, Daphne Major, North Seymour, and back to San Cristobal.  Most of the islands have more than one name.

We would like to thank a number of people, without whom this trip would not have been possible.

Thomas – who planned a great deal of the trip, and who proved to be an invaluable consultant in the final months before the trip

Bob and Vicki – who shepherded us through the trip logistics and planning phase (No Delta 9’s, Bob!)

Sylvia – who made sure we had emergency logistical support in case we needed it, and who was our Lakeside contact during the trip

Sandy, Cathy, and the Business Office – who made sure all the financial pieces were in place, ordered our satellite phone, etc.

Darrell – who arranged financial aid for several of our participants

And the Students of Galapagos LIP 2005 – for an outstanding trip, and use of their fantastic pictures which are featured on the pages above
