DRAWING AND PAINTING II- 2007-2008

1. FOUNDATIONS OF COMPOSITION Balance & Variety

• 3 B/W Contour drawing thumbnails: edit what you see & design variety.
• Pick favorite & do 1-2 value interpretations.

• (Assessment-design-exciting comp vs. photo- real focus on one object)  1 ½  weeks– 9/14

2. FOUNDATIONS OF FIGURE DRAWING

• Gesture, tilts, alignment, weight bearing, proportion
• (Assessment-visibly try each.) 2 wks. 9/17-9/28

3. PASTEL EXPLORATION: TECHNIQUES & STYLE. Draw 1 abstract shape, divide into “light & dark” parts. Ok not to finish!

• Impressionism & Pointillism (Multiple colors of close value and short dabs). Use chalk pastel on black paper: weave dabs & cross hatch.
• Fauvism (Complimentary color & longer strokes.) Use oil pastel on white paper. Weave strokes, scribble & blend.
•  1- 2 day ea. 10/1–10/5 

4. COLOR INTERPRETATION OF MODEL

• Pastel: Complimentary or analogous color –Pick style & chalk or oil pastel. Generally use warm colors in light/cools in shadow. *May use Acrylic but will probably require outside time.

• (Assessment- Harmony & variety vs. “Photo-real” drawing. Composition/placement.) Model here for drawing 1 ½ weeks. 4 wk project 10/8-11/2 Fall mid point is 11/2. Should be 90% done 10/26

5. TRANSFORMATION & CREATIVE PLAY

• 2 “related” pieces. Any media, size or style: abstract/express/surreal. Minimum one piece in color. (Can start with real object as inspiration & transform or start with abstract. Inspiration can become non-recognizable. )
• (Assessment- design & creative involvement) 11/5- 1/18 (3 wks Nov, 3 wks in Dec, 2 wks. in Jan.= 8 wks.  FALL SEMESTER ENDS 1/18. Should be 90% done 1/11. If finish early free choice.

6. OIL PAINTING & REALISM: Local color, effect of light & shadow, intensity, temperature, reflected light, transitions on angular and curved surfaces, turps and mediums.

• (Assessment- aspects of realism) Prep 2-3 days  1/23-25 or 1/28; Painting/s 6 weeks. 1/28- 3/14

7. “SELF PORTRAIT ”- Exterior or Interior Self

• Consider form & content
• Open media, style, size.
• (Assessment relates to artist intent/goals) 8 weeks 3/17-5/23
