PAINTING I: 2007-2008
1. MIXING a range of colors: primaries and secondaries- tints and shades; compliments- intensity and neutralization. Acrylic. 1 ½ weeks.
2. EXPLORING TECHNIQUES: gaining skill with brush and experimental techniques including layering and removal. Acrylic. One week 9/17– 9/21.
3. DESIGN ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES: Explore one of each per painting. Do at least two mini paintings. (Use the same letter, number or simple shape.) Acrylic. 3 wks. 9/24- 10/11. (9th Retreat Wed. 9/26-9/27.)
4. DEPTH- Visual devices for creating space: Acrylic. 5 weeks. 10/15-11/16 Should be about half done for Fall mid semester.
5. BRUSHWORK & VALUE : Varying edges & figure/ground relationships in” representational” art for variety & exciting design. Watercolor. Explore watercolor techniques. 1 week of class mtgs. (No school for 5 days: Thanksgiving, etc.) 11/19-11/30. Painting- 4 weeks. 12/3-1/11. Matting 1 wk-1/18. Fall Semester ends 1/18.
6. REPRESENTATIONAL IMAGERY (Traditional & Impressionist):
Using shape, value and color to convey the observed world. 5 ½ weeks. Wed. 1/23- 3/7 (Feb wk break)
7. EXPRESSIONISM & SURREALISM- Using the visual language to convey mood, narrative or fantasy: Choice of media. Explore ideas and imagery. (*2 weeks) 3/10- 3/21. Painting 5 weeks. 3/24-5/9.

* Work can generally be completed during class time. The painting should be about 90% complete at that point. Final due dates listed for each painting are 1 week after we stop working on them in class. Assessment relates to the concepts & goals for the project as is evident in the title & are italicized.
