Rarely considers the assigned design principles or design principles in general. Work is a random assortment of elements without relationship to each other.

Shows some attempts to consider the assigned design principles or design principles in general.

The work shows strong consideration of assigned principles. Re: more independent work & principles in general –shows understanding of  Unity/Harmony (creating cohesive image,) has Variety, effective Balance (visual weights,) Emphasis, Movement/Rhythm (leads the viewer’s eye through the image not out of it,) or makes effective (selective) choices to fulfill expressive intent.

The work shows more complex understanding or use of design principles: can “juggle multiple balls,” can achieve principle in several ways: (Variety via size, value, texture, color temperature, etc.)

Explores a couple ideas before starting or shows strong development of how could apply concepts & examples (understands project guidelines & uses as springboard for more independent thought,) develops idea &/or image in process, explores options or effects, some connection
