 | JOIN THE TRADITION! SAVE THE DATES! Lakeside Rummage Sales 2009-2010
Fall Sale: October 24-25, 2009
Spring Sale: March 27-28, 2010
The Lakeside Rummage Sales will be held on the Upper School campus in the Fieldhouse, Gym and Wright Community Center. Last year, each sale attracted about 4,000 people and together generated a net income of approximately $175,000 for the Lakeside Parents Association, which in turn funded numerous programs for faculty and students.
Running each sale requires over 400 volunteers working in various shifts and in a host of jobs, such as setting-up, staffing the departments, cashiering, providing security, and moving out. Current Lakeside families, if able, are asked to volunteer for at least one shift per student at each sale. This is a great opportunity to meet other members of the Lakeside community while supporting a huge recycling effort, community service and fundraiser. This is also a great volunteer opportunity to experience with your student!
An invitation to sign-up electronically for a volunteer shift will come a month or so before the sale.
To sign-up in advance, please e-mail your date/shift requests to Vonnie at Vonnie.Breidenstein@lakesideschool.org. If you would prefer not to handle this via e-mail, copies of this form are available at the PA office.

LAKESIDE RUMMAGE: A SEATTLE INSTITUTION Read about the tradition and history of the rummage sales. The tradition of Lakeside Rummage dates back to 1950 when the first small rummage sale raised $2000. Over the past 60 years it has grown and changed many times.
In the early years of Rummage, sales were held in various rent-free venues made available to the school. By 1977, however, Rummage had become so large that space for the Spring Sale had to be rented. Many shoppers remember the days when the sale was held at Seattle Center. From 2003 to 2007 the Spring Rummage Sale moved to the 89,000 square foot Hangar 27 at Sandpoint Magnuson Park. Since 2007, both the Fall and Spring Sales have been held on the Lakeside School campus.
Rummage is a year-round volunteer effort of the Lakeside Parents Association and has been a vital tradition at Lakeside for over half a century. Ongoing Rummage operations are housed in the Rummage Depot located on the northeast corner of the Upper School Campus (14201 4th Avenue NE). Lakeside volunteers receive and sort incoming donations at the Depot throughout the year. New and lightly-used household items in good, working condition are packed and put into storage to be sold at annual sale(s) to raise money for the school. Other goods and specialty items are passed onto to local charities for reuse or recycling. Organizations benefiting from Lakeside Rummage operations include Northwest Center, Multiple Sclerosis Helping Hands, area shelters, PAWS Wildlife Rescue, ReStore, and other non-profits. [See Making Donations link above for hours of operation and additional information on how to make donations.]
As with any event that has been put on faithfully year in and year out for over half a century, Lakeside Rummage is steeped in tradition and lore. Whether it’s the story of the amazing donation of a document signed by Abraham Lincoln or the amusing account of volunteers scrambling to find a donated boot when family jewels had been left in the toe, stories have been passed down through the years creating a special, oral history of a time honored tradition. At its heart, Rummage is a tradition of change, of volunteer commitment, and of the ongoing effort of the Parents Association to support the school. The legacy of this tradition is an undoubtedly unique and impressive volunteer venture that strives to provide a rewarding and fun volunteer experience for Lakeside’s parent and alumni populations that not only strengthens the Lakeside community, but also provides a valuable service to the greater Seattle community through recycling and selling donated items.
Volunteer opportunities for on-going operations as well as for Rummage Sale abound. Further information is provided on the link Volunteering in the Depot or you can simply stop by or call the Rummage Depot. The Rummage Chairs will be happy to help you find a job that fits your interests and availability.
