Students live in a rainforest village near Puriscal, southwest of San Jose. Half of their time is spent in home stays and half in a dorm-like setting at a sustainable living ranch. Students shadow ranch interns and help with the day-to-day tasks such as animal husbandry, general gardening maintenance and food production, cooking and meal preparation, agroforestry, and restoration ecology. Students also do work in the village community, such as weeding the soccer field, planting vetiver to prevent erosion, tidying up the elementary school grounds, and doing trail maintenance in La Cangreja National Park. Cross-cultural activities include playing soccer, going on rainforest hikes, basket weaving with a member of a local indigenous tribe, visiting a chocolate and coffee farm, and participating in community events at the village center. The Middle School Application for Summer 2014 will open on December 9, 2013.
