Lakeside School announced on Monday (May 14) that it has hired Katie Wilson as its varsity volleyball head coach and fifth program head. Wilson takes over a team that returns ten student-athletes from a lineup that registered a 3-9 showing in the competitive Metro Mountain Division a year ago.
“I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to assume the role as head volleyball coach and program head at Lakeside School," said Wilson. “Everyone that I met during the interview process was so helpful and welcoming – I feel like a member of the community already.”
Coach Wilson arrives at Lakeside most recently from Seattle University, where she has been working as an assistant coach for the past year. Prior to her time at Seattle U, she served as the head coach at Seattle Prep for five seasons and led the Panthers to a Metro League championship, a Sea-King District 2 championship, and a WIAA 3A state championship in her final two years there.
“Our search committee saw in Coach Wilson someone who has a proven track record of building a high school volleyball program and extensive experience at all levels of the game,” said Lakeside athletic director Abe Wehmiller.
Wilson’s coaching career started at Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma, where she worked as the head C team coach and assisted at the varsity level. She also has extensive experience on the club volleyball circuit, having been with Sudden Impact Volleyball Club since 2009, and having coached previously with four other clubs.
”Her approach is one that encourages individual player development, but also frames that development in the sort of comprehensive system that will help unify our teams in grades 5-12. We’re highly confident in both her on-court teaching ability and her ability to manage all the other tasks it takes to run a program,” Wehmiller said.
“Lakeside has taken a unique approach to build a volleyball program like no other in the country,” said Wilson. “A methodology that starts with consistent fundamentals in the middle school and continued growth throughout the upper school, where excellence on and off the court can produce exciting and life fulfilling lessons and achievements is the standard we will strive for in our program from day one.”
In addition to her role as varsity head coach, Wilson takes the reins of Lakeside’s 5-12 grade volleyball program head model. She’ll join other Lakeside program heads from football, girls basketball, boys basketball, and running (cross country + track & field) as Lakeside Athletics enters the 2012-13 fixture.
