A resounding string of consecutive appearances in the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association (WSLA) state championship game ended at seven for the Lakeside girls varsity lacrosse team on Tuesday (May 15) as a determined Lake Sammamish squad ran past the Lions in a 14-8 semifinal showing at Parsons Field.

Lake Sammamish (LS) carved out a collective effort on offense as eight different players found the back of the net before the night was over – LS built an 8-4 advantage by the end of the first frame and used a methodical performance in the second stanza to outmatch the Lions by a 6-4 tally and eventual 14-8 final result.

After a goal from Rebecca L. ’13 put the Lions ahead 2-1 with 20:27 to play in the first half, Lakeside would never see the lead again.

Out in front 5-4 with less than five minutes to play in the opening frame, Lake Sammamish reeled off three straight goals to close out the half with a four-goal advantage at 8-4.

As the second half progressed, Lakeside struggled to sustain any offensive momentum – the Lions managed just four goals in the stanza and couldn’t match the impressive defensive effort turned in by Lake Sammamish on the day.

Katelyn C. paced Lake Sammamish with three goals, while Alexandra J., Erin S., Ali S. and Emily S. chipped in two goals apiece.

The Lions’ run at an eighth straight WSLA finale was cut short despite three goals apiece from the junior duo of Natalie F. and Rebecca L.; Kaylee B. ‘13 added two for the Lions.

With the loss, Lakeside will match up with Mercer Island in Saturday’s (May 19) WSLA consolation (3rd/4th) game at Eastside Catholic. Saturday’s game vs. the Islanders is slated to start at 11:00 AM.
