The Lakeside boys varsity soccer team bowed out of the WIAA 3A state tournament on Tuesday (May 15) after falling to Mountain View High School (Vancouver) by a 2-1 scoreline at Interbay Stadium.

Mountain View found its way to state tournament play after dropping Decatur in a 6-4 West Central District 3 showing on Saturday (May 12). The Lions used a 2-1 performance over Bainbridge in Friday’s (May 11) Metro League championship game to secure their spot in Tuesday’s tussle.

As both sides looked to carve out an early edge, scoreless but captivating action dominated much of the action throughout the first half.

With seven minutes (33rd minute) left to play in the opening frame and the Thunder starting to press, Rylan B. found a ball deep in the Lions’ defensive third and put his stamp on the game with an unassisted marker, giving Mountain View a 1-0 advantage.

After multiple buildups resulted in quality opportunities to open the second half, Lakeside would find the equalizer just ten minutes in as Wyatt P. ’15 took a ball from Liam J. ’12 to bring the game back to even at 1-1.

Just as soon as the Lions knotted things up, Rylan B. reintroduced himself to the Lakeside faithful in the 60th minute with a tidy ball across the box to teammate Marshall H. who capitalized and pushed the Thunder out in front for good by a 2-1 margin.

The final 20 minutes of play produced multiple chances for the Lions, but a speedy and technically savvy Mountain View side solidified its position on the scoreboard and pushed through to WIAA quarterfinal action with the 2-1 result.

Seniors Paul P., Jay B., Liam J., Daley S., Andrew B., Jace L., Ethan G., and Walt M. suited up for the last time in a Lakeside uniform Tuesday night.
