Spring 2006 Racing Schedule and Results

(updated 6/15/2006)
USRowing National Youth Championships
June 9,10,11 - Harsha Lake, Cinncinati OH

After a spring racing season which saw Lakeside School Crews rise to the top of the region in a number of events, Lakeside had the most successful Regional Championship in recent memory. As one of the smallest teams (21 varsity girls; 15 varsity boys), competing in one of the most competitive regions in the country (with over 24 teams competing), Lakeside crews qualified for the United States Youth National Championship in the following events: women’s Varsity Eight, Lightweight Eight, Varsity Four, Lightweight Four, Varsity Quad, and Varsity Double; men’s Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, and Lightweight Four. In addition the team medaled in 15 events. In an effort to maximize their chances for success Lakeside Crews opted to decline invitations in several events in order to focus on the women’s Lightweight Eight, women’s Four, women’s Quad and Double. On the men’s side Lakeside opted to accept an invitation to race in the Eight.

Racing at the Youth Nationals saw some of the best junior rowing ever in the United States. Due in large part to the explosion of junior rowing throughout the country spurred on by Title Nine requirements at the collegiate level, made this year’s National Championship Regatta the most widely attended and competitive junior regattas ever.

Henry Riely (11), Brody Rollins (12), Gavin Crynes (12), Christian Crymes (12), Dylan O’Shea (11), Shea Velling (11), Andy Torrance (10), Nick Donald (11) and coxswain Michael Drake (11) finished 9th out of 19 entries in the Junior Men’s Varsity Eight. The crew raced against strong competition throughout the weekend, and according to coach Andrés Hermosilla had their best race of the year in the Petite Final where they finished third, placing them 9th in the country.

Perhaps the best race in the ten year history of the USRowing Youth National Invitational Championship came in the Junior Women’s Lightweight Eight. Anna Greer (10), Lauren Feld (11), Catharine Killien (12), Emily Lobsenz (11), Sojung Yi (10), Marie Johnson (10), Ingrid Akerlind (12), Lindsay Hull (11), and coxswain Abby Hardy (12) finished 6th in a race more than a few experienced coaches called the closest race they had ever seen. To give some perspective on it, there were three crews that finished within 5 hundredths of a second of each other and the overall spread from first place to sixth place was 4.85 seconds.

The girl’s coxwainless Varsity Quad (Johanna Mahoney (12), Hayley Johnson (12), Christine Gilbert (11), and Laura Kehrl (12)) finished fourth in an extremely competitive race where the first three crews finished within 4 tenths of a second of each other.

The girl’s Varsity Four including Kaitlin Cloud (11), Katherine Chung (10), Lindley Mease (11), Sara Pridgeon (9), and coxswain Anthea Fernandes (11) came in 2nd in the C-final and 14th overall out of 18 boats.

The girl’s Varsity Double with Seniors Johanna Mahoney and Hayley Johnson repeated as National Champions winning their event by the largest margin in any event at the Youth Invitational Championship, 9 seconds.

All in all, these are some amazing accomplishments for this team especially considering that many other crews from all over the country boast over 100 rowers on their varsity teams and row year round while Lakeside rows only in the spring. As a credit to strong region in which Lakeside competes, four of the seven women’s national titles were won by crews from the Seattle area. This year both teams have showed an incredible about of dedication and heart, and these results are only glimpse of everything they have accomplished.
