In consultation with Middle School Department Heads and individual teachers, we have created a grid that displays both by grade level and technology skill area our goals for the coming school year.

Arcview/GIS


GIS/Arcview is geographic information system (GIS) that brings the power of databases to the study of population, land use, elections, climate change, and on and on.

We have collected some database resources that can be used with the Arcview/GIS software. Among those you'll find when you click here include census data, geographic data, the CIA's "The World Factbook", and NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center.


Integrating Technology in the Classroom --- Student Projects

Click here to go to a page that has links to a growing set of examples of student use of computers and technology in their classwork and projects. Both Middle and Upper Schools are represented. The site includes examples of web pages, PowerPoint presentations, multimedia projects, writer's workshop, animations, electronic music, and script-writing and video editing.built

Online Resources and Professional Development

ISTE -- The International Society for Technology in Education

ISTE describes itself as "...a nonprofit professional organization with a worldwide membership of leaders and potential leaders in educational technology. We are dedicated to providing leadership and service to improve teaching and learning by advancing the effective use of technology in K–12 education and teacher education. We provide our members with information, networking opportunities, and guidance as they face the challenge of incorporating computers, the Internet, and other new technologies into their schools.

Home of the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS), the Center for Applied Research in Education Technology (CARET), and the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC), ISTE meets its mission through knowledge generation, professional development, and advocacy. ISTE also represents and informs its membership regarding educational issues of national scope through ISTE–DC. We support a worldwide network of Affiliates and Special Interest Groups (SIGs), and we offer our members the latest information through our periodicals and journals."

The national convention convened by NECC was held in Seattle in July, 2003. Next year the convention will be in New Orleans, June 21-23, 2004.

NCCE -- Northwest Council for Computer Education

 

"Supporting and advancing the use of educational technology in the Pacific Northwest"

 

Begun in Oregon, this is a regional organization devoted to technology in education. Its stated goals include:

--- To participate in the coordination of activities relating to the instructional use of computers and related technologies.
--- To promote equal opportunity for all students to enjoy the benefits and instructional enrichment afforded by computers and related technologies.
--- To promote successful practices in the educational use of computers and related technologies.
--- To promote standards of proficiency in the use of computers and related technologies for all educators.

NCCE holds yearly convention generally around the time of spring break. Convention locations rotate between Portland, Seattle, and Spokane. The 2004 gathering will be held in Spokane, April 14-17, 2004.

Learning With Laptops

A website dedicated to "....be a source of honest and independent information about student laptop programs. It is run by educators for educators. We do not receive funds from any computer hardware or software companies.

Learning With Laptops will be of value if teachers at schools with laptop programs share with us their insights, experiments, and results (both positive and negative).

Implementing a student laptop program is a huge endeavor. By sharing our experiences here the adventure can be a more positive process for all involved."

A number of interesting and useful resources here: a monthly newsletter, links to laptop schools, curricular resources, vendors, research on learning with laptops, etc. Created and mainted by "....the wife and husband team of Laurie and Fred Bartels" who together have amassed 38 years of experience as teachers.

FNO -- From Now On

"The Educational Technology Journal"

An electronic journal by educator and author, Jamie McKenzie, this site has an array of resources -- articles, web links, professional development. Jamie is a very active consultant and presenter at schools and teacher conventions. A number of his speeches and workshops are also accessible here as well as information about his books.

Summercore

 

Summercore is an annual week-long workshop held back East (New York & Florida depending on session). This website gives information about these sessions, what's covered, costs, and dates/locations. But there are also some excellent links on this page, particularly the Curriculum Links and Proven Curriculum Ideas links. Much else to explore, too!
