Independent Study Application for English Credit

Students who wish to undertake independent study for English credit must complete a proposal and submit it to the English department for approval two weeks before the end of the semester preceding the semester in which the project is to take place. Members of the department will respond to the student within one week of submission.

Both minor and major credit are available. To qualify for major credit, the demands of the project must equal or exceed those of a regular major English course. Students may do independent projects in addition to but not in lieu of courses in their junior or senior years.  Proposal guidelines follow.

1.  Major questions and topics to be covered
2.  Texts to be read
3.  Amount and kinds of writing
4.  Number and length of meetings per week.
5.  A semester calendar of the work scheduled to be done each week. For example:
        Week of 2/2 - Finish The Iliad.. Write 2-page paper on last 3 books of Iliad.

Background Information: In addition to the course description, write a paragraph explaining how your interest in this project arose. In a second paragraph, explain what other kinds of independent work you have done.

Sponsorship: Beneath background information, specify which English faculty member will sponsor your project, and explain how you will work together

Assessment:  Briefly explain the criteria and procedures by which your work will be assessed, including arrangements for the writing of midterm and term-end comments. Major courses must be assigned letter grades; minor courses will be graded Credit or No Credit.


Obtain signatures from your faculty sponsor, adviser, and parent/guardian before submitting your proposal to the English department.
