Modern Africa
African countries became independent during the 1950s and 1960s with all the hopes and dreams of freedom. Today, we look at sub-Sahara Africa and see a continent ravaged by poverty, HIV/AIDS, resource wars, human rights violations, civil wars, and we wonder, “Why?” This course will attempt to find answers to those questions in the hope that through understanding, we can make a difference. The world community must pay attention to the needs and hopesof the people of Africa as they are some of the most vulnerable global citizens. We will study a variety of problem-solving approaches, including programs initiated by the Organization for African Unity, Non-Government Organizations (NGO’s), and the United Nations.
