Algebra 2 (M210 d and e) 2008-2009
Course Information and Assignments
Instructor: Karl Erickson
Textbook: Algebra 2, Lakeside Upper School Math Department.
(We will hand them out on the first day of class and bill your student accounts.)
Here is a link to an on-line copy of the text and review materials.
Even though there is an on-line copy of the text, you should bring your hard copy to class each day.
Course description: Algebra 2 is basically the study of functions. We will study a variety of functions, including linear, quadratic, exponential, polynomial, logarithmic, rational, and trigonometric functions. We will also discuss some discrete math topics, including matrices, probability, and sequences and series. We begin the year with a study of statistics.
Materials/Technology:
For this course, you will need a TI-83/83+/84 calculator, a notebook or 3-ring binder, and either loose lined paper or an engineering pad (this might be more useful as we will have to do quite a few graphs in this course) to turn in homework Most importantly, bring a curiosity and open mind and this will make the course much more enjoyable for all of us.
Homework:
Do the homework! Tests and quizzes are based on problems similar to those assigned in the homework. Your grade on your homework is primarily an effort grade: if you show your work and demonstrate that you have made a good effort on all of the problems, you can earn full homework credit.
Grading:
Your grade will be determined by your performance on Tests, Quizzes, Homework, and Projects, with the median grade being in the B/B+ range. This means that while we can approximate your grade throughout the term, you won’t know your exact final grade until the end of the grading period. All of your points will be added to determine your grade, so remember: a point is a point, whether it is from homework, a test, or an assignment.
Attendance:
Attendance at every class is mandatory. If you know you will be missing class, see me ahead of time. If you are absent, you need to make up the work as soon as possible. If you are just going to miss the period of class for some reason, you are more than welcome to attend any of the sections of Algebra 2 taught by myself, Mr. Sankrithi, or Mr. Hartley. It is probably easiest to contact me by email if you have any questions.
If you need any help with the material, please see me as soon as possible. Your success is dependent on both of our efforts.
