SOPHOMORE HEALTH &FITNESS  03’-04’

(Tamra Patton)

GOALS

The goal of this course is to provide students with an exposure to basic concepts of personal health and fitness that can be applied throughout their lifetime.  We also want to provide as much information as possible to help students make healthy life decisions for themselves.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a year-long course that meets the Lakeside School graduation requirement.  Students will become skilled and certified in the American Red Cross Standard First Aid course.  They will participate in the ropes course, taught by Chip Mehring of the Outdoor department.  Students practice group cooperation skills and learn the use of climbing equipment and safety skills.  Students test themselves against the Lakeside School fitness test three times a year.  Students learn the fitness principles and practice applying them in a personal fitness program.  During the Nutrition unit students complete a personal dietary analysis.  A full variety of reproductive health topics are covered along with skills in communication and working with others.

Grading and Expectations

Grading is based on a points-earned system during each semester, both semesters culminating in a year-end grade.  Students are not graded on their fitness level, rather their effort and participation.  There are 5 points available each day; on time, prepared, participation, effort, and citizenship.

-              Present; attendance is expected. Unattended-to absences will deduct points for that day. You must speak to me personally on return to class.  You are considered unexcused until this conversation takes place.

-              on time; lateness is disruptive to class progress

-              prepared;  you are expected to come to class prepared (clothes, notebook, book, etc) for that days activity

-              participation;  you are expected to be an active participant in classroom and physical activities

-              citizenship;  work together, mutual respect

Homework/labs; All homework is due on the due date unless PRIOR arrangements have been made.  Late homework deducts 1 point for each school day.  Please see me PRIOR to due date for special arrangements.  YOU are responsible for missed material and assignments.  Assignments will consist of individual and group oral presentation, projects, personal assignments and family assignments.

Exams;  There are no make-up exams!  Make PRIOR arrangements in this instance.

Class Discussions;  Class discussions are meant to be an open exploration of ideas and beliefs.  All are expected to participate.  Respect all at whatever point they may be.  What is said here, stays here!  Respect the diversity.

Please be aware that it can be difficult for some to transition to the academic pieces of this course.  Don’t fall behind on notes, homework etc.  It will be graded as in other academic courses.

Feel free to come see me if you are having trouble, have questions or need special arrangements.  I am very open to work with scheduling if you plan ahead.
