Independent Study Form

Students who wish to receive credit for independent studies must complete this form and submit it to the department head for approval before the end of the second week of first semester or two weeks before the start of spring semester. The department will review the proposal and respond to the student within one week of submission.

Both minor and major credit are available. To qualify for major credit, the study must require equal or greater work than what is traditionally assigned in a major course. Students may take independent courses in addition to, but not in lieu of, offered strands of the disciplines

Project Description

Please attach a page describing course guidelines which includes the following:

• Background Information. Describe work to be done (including bibliography, a schedule of meetings with faculty sponsor and a plan for assessment).
• Sponsorship. What faculty member will sponsor your project, and how will you work together?

List major questions and topics to be covered, texts to be read, amount and kinds of writing, and number of meetings per week. In addition, please attach a calendar of specific work scheduled to be done each week.
