Alan Loveless ’86 is a case manager at Shoreline Community College. He works with the Career Education Options Youth Reengagement Program, which helps students who have dropped out. A large percentage of the program’s youth come from low-income and underrepresented backgrounds, the latter of which comprise 24% of the program’s participants. They often face stigmas and pressures from the educational system, and Alan notes that a major factor in the success of African American students is feeling welcomed and connecting to a staff member.
Thus, the program works to “provide this space to help students specifically feel welcome,” Alan says. He works to bring a sincere connection to education. “I want to see people get where they need to go,” he says. “I want to see students catch their vision.”
