Virtual Alumni Book Club with Gray Pedersen

Friday, Nov. 12 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Unsettled Ground: The Whitman Massacre and Its Shifting Legacy in the American West

Retired Lakeside history teacher Gray Pedersen returns to the virtual “classroom” to continue our series of alumni book clubs with former teachers. From Gray: “I chose the book Unsettled Ground: The Whitman Massacre and Its Shifting Legacy in the American West because it’s about several interesting topics. First is the hero-worship of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman that I, along with so many others in Washington State, learned about as a child (did Lakeside students also learn that story in grade school?). Second, the Native perspective on this bloody incident, explained through the experience and thinking of the Cayuse people, has never before been part of the Whitman saga. And, third, the recent revision of so many aspects of U.S. history, especially the issue of so-called “Critical Race Theory,” is relevant to this book by Cassandra Tate. She takes a fresh look at what happened when white frontier missionaries, bringing new medicines and religion, moved onto the lands of indigenous people.”

This event is brought to you by the Lakeside/St. Nicholas Alumni Board.
