Ayrault Shellhouse

Lakeside’s rowing facility is located in Kenmore, at the northern tip of Lake Washington. The original Cunningham Boathouse, named for longtime Lakeside coach and English teacher Frank Cunningham, was built by hand by coaches and rowers in 1965 and housed the crew team until 1986. The Ayrault Shellhouse was completed in 1986 and renovated in 2011. It supports Lakeside’s novice and varsity crews in the fall and spring, a Middle School sculling program, and the Lakeside Educational Enrichment Program (LEEP) rowing activities in the summer. It is named after Dan Ayrault, former Lakeside Head of School and winner of two Olympic gold medals for rowing (1960 and 1964).

The Ayrault Shellhouse utilizes top-of-the-line audio and video technology to help athletes and coaches train with more accuracy and efficiency. Technology includes three projectors, two 46-inch flat screen televisions, six-zone audio, three in-house tablets, 10 embedded USB hubs, and a centralized audio/visual computer system that allows for interconnected racing on indoor rowing machines, video capture and review, and music playback.
