Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

Shared values that bring us together

L

akeside’s longstanding commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) is embedded in the mission: to sustain a school in which “individuals representing diverse cultures and experiences instruct one another in the meaning and value of community and in the joy and importance of lifelong learning.” Over the course of their education at Lakeside, students develop an equity and inclusion mindset: something we believe is critical to navigating difference in a multicultural world and thriving personally, educationally, and professionally.

While every individual and family has their own set of values, we can only be successful as a community when we have some shared values that bring us together. Every member of the Lakeside community commits to fostering an environment where each person can achieve their fullest potential and feel that they are seen, heard, valued, and loved.

Our work together

Over the past half-century, Lakeside has developed programs and processes to make the school more inclusive and equitable to all individuals. Administrators, faculty, and staff are taking actions that have an immediate impact as well proactively moving toward systemic and institutional changes that will have sustained impact. Launched in 2018, Our Work Together is Lakeside’s current equity and inclusion initiative. Objectives and strategies have been revised and added as progress has been made. The initiative was substantially updated in 2020. Read background on this work.

Members of the Lakeside community are encouraged to review what the school has done, what is planned, and share their constructive ideas about actions we should consider taking.

Shared language and terms help build an understanding of programs and efforts. Students, faculty, staff, administrators, and trustees regularly engage in meaningful conversations about these terms and how they live in the school and community.
