Congratulations Elaine Christensen, new head of school at Open Window School!
Congratulations Elaine Christensen, new head of school at Open Window School!

Dear Lakeside School community,

I want to let you all know that Elaine Christensen, our Middle School director and director of professional development, has accepted the position as head of school at Open Window School in Bellevue. Elaine will be leaving Lakeside in July 2020, the end of the 2019-2020 school year. I am grateful that we have Elaine with us for one more year! Elaine will be a great school head and Open Window School is fortunate to be getting such a smart, talented, knowledgeable, and dynamic educator.

A Lakeside alumnus, Elaine returned to Lakeside in 1992 to teach English and run the community service program (the precursor to our Service Learning program). She subsequently became, in turn, dean of students, Upper School assistant director, and Upper School associate director. Since becoming Lakeside's Middle School director in fall 2013, she has overseen the renovation of performing arts facilities, championed the innovative and impactful change to the 8th grade Global Service Learning program, and led the development of the schedule the Middle School will implement this fall. In addition to her divisional leadership, Elaine for the last decade has served as the director of professional development for our faculty and staff, ably guiding the development of more than 200 employees during a period of significant change.

In short, Elaine has done it all during her time at Lakeside. She understands every aspect of school life and is one of the most talented strategic thinkers I have worked with; she understands the big picture and aligns school programs with the mission. She was instrumental in creating the Upper School Judicial Committee process and student life departments in Upper School, in creating our "bold and doable" curriculum review five years ago, and, most recently, in creating the re-envisioning process. She even reinvigorated the crew program, raising money and energy for the program as part of our last capital campaign.

Elaine is a high-integrity person who, for the past 27 years has devoted her time and energy to making Lakeside School the best it can be for our students, parents and guardians, and faculty and staff. It has been a privilege to work with Elaine, and I know she will provide wise and thoughtful leadership to her new school!

Thank you, Elaine, for all that you have done for the students, parents and guardians, faculty, staff, and administrators of this school.

We have retained the search firm of Wickenden and Associates to conduct the search for a new Middle School director and they are underway with that search. Faculty and staff, parents and guardians, students, board members, and administrators will be involved in the search process.

Please join me in congratulating Elaine!
