Lakeside faculty, administrators work with students and faculty in South Africa

For the second year, Lakeside teachers and administrators are on a GSL experience that mirrors Lakeside's popular student GSL summer trips. Middle School teachers Yvette Avila and Jamie Monkkonen, Upper School teachers Stephanie Wright and Barry Wong, and administrators Elaine Christensen and Charlotte Blessing are working with students and educators in South Africa.

"As educators who teach, counsel, and support students, Lakeside's faculty play a crucial role in students' development as global citizens," said Blessing, the director of global education. "This program gives them an opportunity to expand their global understanding, increase their familiarity with a culture unlike their own, and develop intercultural competence—just like the students."

The faculty live with South African educators from a partner school, forming personal relationships and gaining a firsthand perspective on life in a small town in Africa. They serve the South African community by teaching curricular modules and effective classroom strategies in a partner school. And they engage in GSL reflection-focused curriculum that develops cultural awareness and intercultural competence.
