Lakeside's Middle School and Upper School choirs will participate in a choir festival co-hosted by Lakeside School and The Overlake School. The festival begins on Thursday, Oct. 19 when Lakeside students in the 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade choirs will be joined by students from The Overlake School for a daylong workshop with conductor, singer, and composer Tesfa Wondemagegnehu. Based in Minneapolis, Wondemagegnehu is an internationally recognized guest conductor, music educator, and composer.
On Friday, Oct. 20, high school student singers from Lakeside, Overlake, Eastside Preparatory School, and The Northwest School will come together at Overlake for a daylong choir workshop with Wondemagegnehu. The size of the choir will have grown significantly this year, with an expected 250 singers participating. "We are delighted to have Tesfa return for year two of Singfest!; the students loved working with him," says Lakeside choral director Shekela Wanyama. "The entire experience expands their perspective on the power and joy of choral singing." Eighth grader Aliyah L. '22 concurs, adding that "singing in a large group with skilled and talented singers and an amazing guest conductor makes me feel proud of what we can do."
The festival culminates in a free, public performance on Oct. 20. The concert begins at 7 p.m. at The Overlake School's Fulton Performing Arts Center.
