Every spring, students' artistic growth and creative development is on full display: In the galleries you'll see evidence of unstructured problem-solving, applied imagination, and the translation of ideas into physical reality. In the theater, once-hesitant students embrace the spotlight as they stand and deliver confident and convincing performances. It is all part of a journey in which students learn to embrace failure as essential to growth.
It's a great time to visit our beautiful campus and enjoy a high-quality art show, compelling scene work, or a polished musical performance. Come enjoy some culture!
Here's what we have on the schedule. Find details on the online arts calendar.
The Middle School drama program will feature a series of class performances: 7th-grade drama students perform on April 4, and the 6th-grade drama students perform on May 9. At the Upper School, students in all drama classes will present scene work in year-end showcases. The annual Drama IV Showcase occurs on June 5.
The YES 2019 Upper School Drama Year-End Showcase takes place on May 15. YES 2019 is a showcase of classroom work from the 9th and 10th grade drama classes (Drama I and Drama II). They will be performing examples of work from throughout the year, including original monologues, improv, scene work and short films. It will begin at 6 p.m. in St. Nicolas Auditorium and go until approximately 7:30. Family and friends are encouraged to come and celebrate the student work!
Spring brings a series of concerts, encompassing performances by all Lakeside orchestras, bands, and choirs. The series kicks off on April 23 with a choir concert, featuring both the Middle School and Upper School choirs. The next two days will feature the 7th- and 8th-grade band and orchestra (April 24) and the 5th- and 6th-grade orchestra and 6th-grade band (April 25).
On Wednesday, May 1, the Upper School instrumental music concert will feature competition winner flutist Minsoo K. '20 performing with Lakeside's symphony orchestra. Fellow competition winner violinist Tea F. '19 performs with the symphony orchestra Wednesday, May 29 at Arts Fest (more on that below!).
We highly encourage parents and guardians to visit the gallery at Pigott Fine Arts Center at the Upper School, as well as the art displays located throughout the Middle School. Senior visual arts shows – gallery-style exhibits and receptions featuring the work of seniors in the visual arts – will run in Pigott Family Arts Center from mid-April through mid-May. The shows are collaborative group efforts between students working across all areas of the program, in photography, ceramics, sculpture, painting, and drawing. Additionally, keep an eye out for work from drawing and painting students who will be engaging in a new animal illustration project that features a guest artist from the medical profession and a trip to the Woodland Park Zoo.
Arts Fest 2019!
Arts Fest – Lakeside's annual celebration of visual and performing arts – will be held on Wednesday, May 29 at the Upper School. Please join us starting at 6 p.m. for light refreshments and an evening of art, drama, and music. We will once again have three venues and multiple opportunities for families and guests to sample an array of fantastic performances and gallery exhibits. Stay tuned for more information!
Thank you for your continued support of the arts and we hope to see you at a show!
