Members of the Lakeside community are invited to participate in Lakeside Summer Reads 2019! Upper School students, faculty, and staff have recommended 65 books to bring along to the park, the beach, or a cozy couch. Find the list here.
"Self-directed reading offers an avenue to explore our own curiosities, and it provides opportunities to develop our understanding and empathy for experiences very different from our own," says librarian Carly Pansulla. "Plus, choosing something that's just what you're in the mood at that moment for can be so satisfying and empowering." Adds librarian Monica Gu, "fiction and graphic novels/comics are the library's two highest circulating collections. Graphic novels and comics are a particularly excellent choice because they are quick to read and very engaging, giving our busy students the chance to squeeze in some self-directed reading without having to set aside a large chunk of time!"
Librarians created extra motivation with a summer reading raffle. Upper School students can enter the raffle by submitting short (3-5 sentences) reviews of any books they read over the summer – either off the Summer Reads list or from their own "to be read" pile. For each book they read, they can enter a new review (and a new raffle entry). Students can submit reviews throughout the summer; the deadline for submissions is Sept. 16. Raffle prizes include bookstore gift cards and mystery tote bags filled with book-themed goods. Financial aid will apply to summer reading.
