Inclement weather and snow policy

Lakeside School aims to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for our students and employees. When students and employees are not able to be on campus due to widespread and severe inclement weather (including snow or smoke), the following policy will be used.

In the event of widespread power outages or other weather events, adjustments to this plan may be communicated.

Middle School:

When school is closed for inclement weather, Lakeside Middle School will use the following guidelines:

First day: School is canceled, and no work assigned or due. Assignments originally scheduled to be due on this day are now due the first day back on campus, or on the fourth day in a row of the weather event/remote school (whichever is sooner). The day (A, B or C) is skipped.

Second day: Teachers will post a message on Canvas or email students no later than 10:30 a.m. with asynchronous assignments or expectations for students for that day of the cycle (A, B or C) only – not for students who do not have class on that day. Assignments are limited to 20-30 minutes per class. Work that requires in-class instruction or that is not easily completed at home will have deadlines extended. Advisors hold Zoom meetings at 11 a.m. to check in with advisees and ensure that all students know what they have to do.

Third day: Classes resume synchronously via Zoom using the standard daily schedule.

Fourth day and beyond: Classes resume synchronously via Zoom using the standard daily schedule.  Any assignment that was originally due on the first snow day should be submitted (if appropriate) by this day.

Subsequent weather events will repeat this pattern.

Middle School example: If it snows on an A day, the following schedule applies:

  • First day:  A day is canceled and no classes are held.
  • Second day: Asynchronous B day classes and advisory Zoom meeting at 11 a.m.
  • Third day: Synchronous C day classes on Zoom.
  • Fourth day: Synchronous A day classes on Zoom, and assignments originally due last A day (the initial snow day) are due.

Upper School:

When school is closed for inclement weather, Lakeside Upper School will use the following guidelines:

First day: School is canceled, and no work assigned or due. Work that was previously assigned and due that day, will be due on the next day the class meets. Work that requires in-class instruction or that is not easily completed at home will have deadlines extended.

Second day: Faculty will post a message and asynchronous assignments on Canvas by 10 a.m. for the classes that day (A or B schedule). Assignments are limited to 30 to 45 minutes per class. Work that requires in-class instruction or that is not easily completed at home will have deadlines extended.

Third day: Classes will resume synchronously via Zoom using the standard daily schedule and continue this pattern until the return to campus. Any assignment that was originally due on the first snow day should be submitted by this day.

Subsequent weather events will repeat this pattern.
