Lakeside Asian-Pacific Students (LAPS) affinity group’s purpose is to provide support for any students who identify as Asian-Pacific Islanders (API) on Lakeside’s campus. This academic year, our goals are to continue expanding our discussion topics to illuminate the diversity within the API community, as well as go into more depth to encourage students to step out of their comfort zone and fully engage with their identities. There are many different and unique cultures within the API community, so we aim to provide a safe space and bonding zone for any and all students who identify with our affinity group. By doing so, we hope to build a strong community and encourage a positive sense of identity within the API student population at Lakeside.
For the past four years, LAPS has organized the annual Lunar New Year assembly as a fun and informative way to spread the Lunar New Year spirit to the Upper School Lakeside community. LAPS’s goal with the Lunar New Year assembly this year was to highlight different aspects of various Asian cultures — both in terms of traditions and pop culture — we’ve interacted with to the rest of the Lakeside community and engage in revelry and festivities to celebrate the new year.
The assembly included informative videos about how different cultures across Asia celebrate the Lunar New Year, a musical performance paying tribute to Studio Ghibli films, and dance performance covers from K-pop group TWICE and C-pop group TFBoys.
