This past summer, six Lakeside faculty members had the incredible opportunity to travel halfway around the world to participate in educational service learning. As one of the lucky teachers included in the Sumbandila Holiday School, I had the privilege to meet and teach motivated, resilient students living in rural South Africa. These students are selected for the Sumbandila program because they show outstanding academic achievement despite underprivileged backgrounds.
During the one-week Holiday School (which runs during their winter break), students received enrichment in English, math, and personal development, as well as exposure to subjects like art, photography, and dance. While we arrived with enthusiasm and knowledge in our subjects, the students brought a willingness to share their cultures, backgrounds, and incredible spirit with us.
