An Independent School • Grades 5-12

Something I’ve been doing for the last 10+ years is maintaining the “senior locker.” What is the senior locker? It was a cabinet in the student center where seniors had full access to their own treats, like oatmeal, granola bars, cup of soup, Keebler cookies, and other treats. As they rose through grades, they knew their turn was coming and were very appreciative of this particular perk of being a senior.

Seniors have access to the student center snacks available to all Upper School students, but in acknowledgement of their leadership and helping with underclasspersons in the student center, they get a little more. They would tell me what they want, what their favorite cookies are (lemon cookies from Fred Meyer), what they need for after school (Cup-a-Soup), what makes them smile (Fruit Roll-Ups), and I supply them!

Working to maintain the senior locker perk this year, when seniors returned to campus in February, I put together a personal supply of treats for each student. Seniors who were remote received their packages at a supply pick-up, and those on campus received treat bags in advisory. I was happy to keep this tradition alive in an unusual year.
