Middle School admissions activity and Upper School interview

by Lilli Forgette, admissions visit manager, and Patrick Stancil, assistant director of admissions and financial aid

Happy October!

The 2023-2024 admissions season is well underway, which means you have likely seen information about the Upper School Interview or Middle School Admissions Activity on our website or in Ravenna. In this month’s newsletter, we give more information and some helpful tips about this important application step.

Applicants can register for the Upper School Interview or the Middle School Admissions Activity once they have submitted their preliminary application and paid the $25 application fee.

Applicants are limited to registering for one interview or admissions activity timeslot at a time. Please be mindful when registering for your interview or admissions activity timeslot and ensure the date and time you select works for your schedule and applicant. We will withdraw you from your previously registered timeslot if you reserve another timeslot.

Middle School Admissions Activity

The Middle School Admissions Activity is a fun, interactive group activity where students collaborate with peers to complete a group project or task. Not only does this allow us, the admissions team, the opportunity to meet and get to know each applicant, but it also gives us information about a student’s ability to work with others in a group setting. Students will also have the chance to meet Lakeside teachers and ask anything about life at Lakeside Middle School. Frequent topics include lunch, clubs, sports, and classes. While there is nothing your student needs to prepare ahead of time, we encourage them to bring their whole selves and be ready to have some fun!

Helpful tips for the Admissions Activity:

We host in-person Admissions Activities on our Middle School campus each Thursday between Oct. 6, 2022 and Feb. 2, 2023, with the exception of Nov. 24, Dec. 22, and Dec. 29. Middle School applicants can register for the Middle School Admissions Activity once they submit their preliminary application in Ravenna. We open registration for the Admissions Activity on a rolling basis. Spaces will fill up quickly, so we highly encourage families to register as soon as they see an available spot in Ravenna; we strongly discourage families to wait to register.

Families whose primary residence is outside of Island, King, Kitsap, Pierce, or Snohomish counties are welcome to attend an Admissions Activity virtually via Zoom. Specific dates are available in Ravenna, and please email with your desired event date.

Upper School Interview

Lakeside's Upper School interview is a relaxed, one-on-one conversation with a faculty member or member of the admissions team. This year, applicants have the option of attending an interview virtually via Zoom or in-person at our Upper School campus. Our goal is to get to know the applicant beyond what is included in the application. Topics discussed are based on students’ interests and have included: black holes; favorite books or school projects; babysitting; bird watching; playing video games; sports wins and losses; baking cupcakes; community service, and more. There will also be an opportunity for applicants to ask any questions they may have about Lakeside.

Our Upper School interviews are typically 20-30 minutes in length and are offered throughout the week. We have morning and afternoon times, October through January. Registration is required in Ravenna (once a family has submitted the preliminary application and $25 application fee), and we encourage applicants to complete this step as early as possible. Applicants do not need to attend a campus tour or open house prior to the interview.

Please note: we are offering both virtual and in-person Upper School interviews this year to provide more flexibility for applicants and families. There is no difference between the two options — the same faculty and staff members conduct both interviews and both are with the student only; there is no parent/guardian component. Again, we encourage applicants to register for any available interview slot as soon as they become available.

Helpful interview tips for our Upper School applicants:

  • There is nothing to prepare for the interview — just be ready to participate!
  • There is nothing to bring to the interview — except for any questions you may have about Lakeside.
  • Finally, and most importantly — be you! Be yourself! We want to get to know YOU.

Whether you choose a virtual or in-person Upper School interview, we look forward to meeting your student, learning more about you, and answering any and all questions you may have about Lakeside School.
