A few weeks ago, we learned that the Catholic Youth Organization, the league in which most of our Middle School sports teams compete, cancelled this winter’s basketball season due to COVID. You can imagine how disappointing that was for our Middle School athletes. Well, into the void stepped our varsity basketball teams!
This past Saturday, the girls and boys varsity basketball teams hosted a day for the Middle School teams in The Paul G. Allen Athletics Center. With parents, guardians, siblings, and friends in the stands, Middle School teams scrimmaged against each other, while our varsity athletes did everything from officiating the games to running the scoreboard, as well as provide live commentary and announcing over the gym audio system. Most importantly, every Middle School basketball player got to play!
Also on hand were Assistant Directors of Athletics Maile Wong (who runs our Middle School athletics program) and Dionna Leach, girls basketball program head Mia Augustavo-Fisher, and head boys varsity basketball coach and Middle School Assistant Director Rob Blackwell.
“Our Middle School athletes have had to practice flexibility and resilience this season in ever-changing circumstances,” Wong said. “It was really gratifying to see them put everything they had been practicing (since November!) on the court. And our varsity athletes were so committed to making the Middle School athletes feel supported and celebrated. They turned a real disappointment into a community celebration!”

And everyone will do it all again on Saturday, Feb. 5, at The Paul G. Allen Athletics Center, so put it on your calendar if you would like to attend!
