An Independent School • Grades 5-12

by Bernie Noe, head of school

It is with excitement, pride, and sadness that I write to tell you that our deeply valued colleague Felicia Wilks, assistant head of school and Upper School director, will be leaving Lakeside at the end of the 2021-2022 school year to become the new head of The Spence School in New York City. Felicia and her family will be returning to the East Coast, closer to extended family, after a five-year stay in the Pacific Northwest. We are grateful that we have her for one final year!

The Spence School is one of the strongest independent schools in the country, and it will it be an interesting, fun, and dynamic school for Felicia to lead. To Spence, Felicia will bring her energy, authenticity, work ethic, great ability, and commitment to the students.

Felicia joined Lakeside as Upper School director in 2017 and in 2019 was named assistant head of school, with all-school responsibility for overseeing athletics and experiential education. During her time at Lakeside, she worked to strengthen the school’s harassment and sexual assault policy; create our new department of experiential education; design, along with Hans de Grys, a new Upper School schedule that will launch next year; review our hiring practices; and conduct a review of our safety practices in all areas of the school.

The hallmarks of Felicia’s four years at Lakeside are her close relationship with the students; her deep respect and caring for the faculty; and her love of school life in general. I think she was most happy along the sidelines of games, standing or even huddling with the team!

I have appreciated her candor with me, her sense of humor, and her dedication to what she believes to be best for the school. She is a talented administrator and Spence is lucky to get her!

Early this summer, in collaboration with Lakeside’s new school head, we will begin a national search for a new Upper School director, and I will be in touch with some of you about serving on the search committee. The hiring decision will be made by the new school head.

Please join me, everyone, in congratulating Felicia on her exciting new job!!
