The 2020–2021 Virtual Equity & Inclusion Speaker Series continues Thursday, Feb. 4 with Joy DeGruy, a nationally and internationally renowned researcher and educator. Her research focuses on the intersection of racism, trauma, violence, and American chattel slavery.

DeGruy will discuss “Historical Impact of Racism in Present-Day America: The Illusion of Inclusion” via Zoom at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4. RSVP here for the event.

“To say Joy DeGruy is a magnetic and inspiring speaker does not do her passion and commitment justice,” says Assistant Director of Equity and Inclusion Debbie Bensadon. “We are very fortunate to include her in this speaker series, and we are thrilled to invite those in our extended community to learn, engage, and connect.”

Joy DeGruy has over thirty years of practical experience as a professional in the field of social work. She conducts workshops and trainings in the areas of intergenerational/historical trauma, mental health, social justice, improvement strategies and evidence-based model development. DeGruy has published numerous refereed journal articles and book chapters, and is the author of the seminal book “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury & Healing.” She has also developed an assessment scale for measuring respect with regard to African American male youth. Sixteen independent schools have joined together to present the 2020–2021 Virtual Equity & Inclusion Speaker Series. The hope is to further our communities’ educational experiences by offering access to learning from national speakers during four online events. Previous speakers included Farzana Nayani and Chris Crass.

The last speaker in this series will be nationally recognized and locally based author Ijeoma Oluo, author of “So You Want to Talk About Race” and the new book “Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America.” She will speak via Zoom on May 18. Attendees must RSVP to receive the Zoom link for each event.
