Middle School Athletics award named for Sandy Schneider

For years, Lakeside’s Middle School Athletics program has, at the end of each season, given out a Sportsmanship Award, presented to one athlete from each Middle School team. Recipients of the awards are nominated by their head coach from that season for their leadership, their sportsmanship, and their positive representation of themselves, their teammates, and their school.

That award will now be named for Sandy Schneider, longtime Lakeside teacher, advisor, coach, and volunteer, Assistant Director of Athletics Maile Wong ’11 announced to the Middle School community on Nov. 17.

“Her approach to her work in Lakeside Athletics exemplifies what the recipients of this award are showing their coaches, teammates, and the rest of the community each day: positivity, joy, and a relentless pursuit of excellence through hard work, while always showing compassion and respect for teammates as well as opponents,” Wong told Middle School students, faculty, and staff during a community meeting.

Schneider began working at Lakeside in 1979, and retired in 2003, but came back for brief coaching stints with the Lions girls basketball team in the 2008-2009 and 2016-2017 seasons. She was inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame in 2013, and the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame in 2016.
