As part of Lakeside’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Lakeside School Parents and Guardians Association is launching a new project: We Are Lakeside. Part of Our Work Together: Inclusion, Multiculturalism, Respect, We Are Lakeside brings parents and guardians on the same learning journey that students, faculty, and staff have been on the last several years.
A big piece of this project centers around education and resources. The PGA’s T.J. Vassar Diversity and Community Committee (TJVDCC), in collaboration with Lakeside’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and communications teams, is excited to announce the launch of the new PGA DEI webpages.
The page includes information about TJVDCC, the activities and events this committee runs, and the multiple ways to get involved in one of three DEI workstreams: communication, events, and education.
There is also information on parent and guardian affinity groups, how to join, and the important role these groups play in our parent and guardian community. You will also find a useful FAQ on affinity groups.
Most importantly, there is a comprehensive list of resources available for the entire school community to explore and learn. There are a variety of topics to filter by; and, because there are a variety of different learning styles, the list of resources can also be filtered by articles, books, videos, TED talks, and a variety of other media. They can also be filtered by foundational, intermediate, or advanced resources. The resources page also includes a tab for the PGA lending library, where books purchased by the PGA can be borrowed by any Lakeside parent or guardian. This is accompanied by key foundational definitions. Later this spring, we’ll add a PGA DEI education module, which is currently under development.
We hope this will be a helpful toolkit for the parent and guardian community to collectively grow and develop our equity and inclusion mindsets, and support Lakeside's equity and inclusion initiative, Our Work Together. The new webpage is one of several opportunities for parents and guardians to engage in equity and inclusion work at Lakeside. During re-enrollment (or enrollment, for new families), you’ll find a link to a short survey that will help the PGA and DEI team construct a learning program that is attuned to the Lakeside community’s needs for achieving greater equity, social justice, and anti-racism awareness. We’ll share other opportunities this spring and summer.
As parents and guardians, we are our children’s most powerful teachers. We at the PGA are excited to partner with the educators at Lakeside School and, alongside our kids, actively engage in learning about equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. Together, we can help make Lakeside a more equitable and inclusive community and help our children develop an equity and inclusion mindset — something they’ll need at every point in their lives.
